THE HUNDREDTH CENTENARY OF PIERO BARILLA

BarillaBarilla celebrates, on April 15 at the Teatro Regio in Parma, April 16 at Bocconi University in Milan, the centenary of the birth of Pietro Barilla the entrepreneur who has helped to make the world famous Italian cuisine.

Barilla, originally established in 1877 as a bread and pasta shop in strada Vittorio Emanuele in Parma,  ranks as one of today’s top Italian food groups. Barilla leads in the global pasta business, the pasta sauces business in continental Europe, the bakery products business in Italy and the crispbread business in Scandinavia. The Group employs more than 13,000 people and in 2011 had net sales of more than 4 billion euro. The Company has been managed for over 130 years by one family’s entrepreneurial experience and is now run by the fourth generation siblings: Guido, Luca, Paolo and Emanuela Barilla.

Barilla has become one of the world’s most esteemed food companies and is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Italian know-how by respecting its longstanding traditional principles and values, considering employees a fundamental asset and developing leading-edge production systems.

Almost 4 acres of  land was given to the city and rebuilt between 2001 and 2003 thanks to the Urban Development Program. The project was designed by celebrated architect Renzo Piano and is one of the most innovative industrial redevelopments.
